Genesis Bordner for Horry County Council (District 5)

About the Candidate

“I’m not here to play politics — I’m here to be the pain in the ass that ordinary people deserve on their side.”

I’ve lived the struggles too many families face. Born to a teenage mother and an addicted father, I grew up depending on social services. As a teen, I was homeless, working and sleeping in my car while fighting for my education. I earned three degrees and built a new life, but like so many others, I’m burdened with student debt that never seems to go away or even get smaller.

Three years ago, I became “Mommy” to a young child who needed stability and love after being born into the chaos of addiction. And yet, even with all my hard work, I can’t afford the cost of adopting him.

That’s not just my story — it’s a reflection of a broken system. I’m running because I know what it’s like to be left behind, and I refuse to let Horry families be ignored any longer.

Doctors for Horry: Putting Healthcare First

The Challenge

Horry County is facing a critical doctor shortage that threatens the health and well-being of our community:

  • Statewide shortfall: By 2030, South Carolina is projected to be short over 3,200 doctors, including more than 800 primary care physicians.

  • Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs): 41 of South Carolina’s 46 counties — including Horry — are designated shortage areas.

  • Behind the curve: Our physician-to-patient ratio is about 23% worse than the national average.

  • Local strain: A 2016 study showed just 24.9 physicians per 10,000 residents in Horry County — and our population has only grown since then.

  • Rapid growth: With over 100,000 new residents expected in the coming years, demand will only increase.

Compounding the problem is our aging population:

  • The median age in Horry County is 49.3, significantly higher than the state and national average.

  • Nearly 1 in 3 residents is 65 or older, putting additional pressure on our healthcare system.

  • Our reputation as a retirement destination means demand for care will only continue to grow.

What this means: If we don’t act now, healthcare access will decline, wait times will rise, and working families and seniors alike will struggle to get the care they need.

The Solution: Doctors for Horry

Genesis Bordner believes healthcare access is a basic community need — and she has a plan to make Horry County a place where doctors want to work and raise their families.

1. Student Debt Relief Partnerships

  • Advocate for programs that help repay medical school loans for doctors who commit to practicing in Horry County.

  • With average med school debt topping $200,000, loan forgiveness is a powerful recruitment tool.

2. Competitive Incentives

  • Partner with hospitals and clinics to offer signing bonuses, housing stipends, or tax credits for physicians relocating to our community.

  • Keep Horry competitive with other fast-growing regions.

3. Strong Schools & Safe Communities

  • Invest in public schools and family-friendly neighborhoods so medical professionals see Horry as a place to put down roots.

  • Quality schools are key to recruiting long-term doctors.

4. A Supportive Practice Environment

  • Cut unnecessary red tape that interferes with how doctors provide care.

  • Ensure physicians can serve patients’ best interests, especially in areas like women’s health.

5. A Vibrant Community

  • Showcase Horry’s natural beauty, cultural life, and community spirit to attract medical families.

  • A thriving cultural and lifestyle scene helps recruit — and retain — talent.

6. Retention Through Respect

  • Create county-level medical advisory groups where healthcare professionals shape local health policy.

  • When doctors feel respected and heard, they stay.

Genesis Bordner’s Commitment

As your representative on Horry County Council (District 5), Genesis Bordner will champion policies that attract, support, and retain doctors, ensuring access to quality healthcare for every resident.

Horry County deserves leadership that looks forward — leadership that will build a stronger, healthier community for families, retirees, and future generations.
