About Freewoods Farm

Freewoods Farm, located in the Burgess community of Myrtle Beach, is the only African-American historical living farm museum in the United States. This 40-acre working farm preserves and celebrates the vital contributions of African-American farmers from 1865 to 1900, a time when small, animal-powered family farms were central to economic independence and community life.

Visitors experience authentic farming methods, tools, crops, animals, and buildings of the era, along with a Wetlands Preserve that highlights the essential link between farms and the environment.

Through hands-on education, historical demonstrations, and cultural programs, Freewoods Farm honors a vital yet often overlooked chapter of American history, while fostering agricultural awareness, tourism, and community development.
