Once upon a time, there was a group of folks who believed that “greed is good,” and Wall Street brokers made fortunes off the backs of everyday people. Now, in a twisted evolution, the mantra of the MAGA-dominated GOP has become “government greed is good.” But for their agenda to work, the working poor must lose—so Trump’s ego-driven minions can impress their billionaire donors by slashing taxes for the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. It’s Robin Hood in reverse.
The so-called “One Big Bag” (OBB) Act is actually a hodgepodge of loosely connected, unrelated bills bundled together for one purpose: to please the Ringmaster of the GOP Clown Circus—Donald Trump. And what’s the cost? An increase of over $2 trillion to the federal deficit by 2034—fitting, since fiscal irresponsibility has become a hallmark of today’s Republican Party.
There’s so much packed into this bill, it’s doubtful that even its authors understand the full scope or impact on American families. Among the lowlights:
- Rescinds portions of the Inflation Reduction Act
- Slashes clean energy credits
- Eliminates taxes on gun silencers
- Offers tax credits for donations to school voucher programs
Now those priorities clearly go hand in hand—right?
And Then There’s the “Trump Account”
The crown jewel of absurdity: a “Trump Account” for every American baby born over the next four years. Each account comes with a $1,000 government deposit—funded by you, the taxpayer.
Meanwhile, Trump finally gets his “legacy wall” along the Southern Border, with an added $90 billion boost for ICE enforcement. And, of course, his billionaire buddies get a permanent tax break—with a top tax bracket fixed at 37%.
Guess Who’s Paying?
You. The American taxpayer. That’s who’s footing the bill for all of it—these reckless giveaways to the rich and powerful.
There are even more programs tucked into this legislative circus, but let’s focus on the ones that sound good—until you read the fine print.
One Big Bag of Baloney
Some of the new tax deductions sound helpful, but come with serious caveats:
No Tax on Tips
At first glance, this looks like a win for service workers. But:
- You must report all your tips to your employer
- The deduction caps at $25,000 per year, per person
- You don’t see the benefit until you file your annual tax return
- Credit card tips are trackable—but cash tips aren’t. So… who’s really benefiting?
No Tax on Overtime
This one is extra tricky.
- Only “premium pay” (the extra amount above base pay) is tax-free
- Example: If you make $20/hr and earn $30/hr for overtime, only the extra $10/hr is exempt
- Also: Overtime only counts if you exceed 40 hours per week under federal FLSA rules
- Union rules don’t apply. So if you work 9 hours one day but don’t hit 40 for the week, those extra hours don’t count
And again—you won’t see any benefit until you file your taxes.
Social Security “Deduction” for Seniors
There’s a lot of fine print here, too. These so-called “benefits” come with caveats, conditions, and an expiration date of 2028. Read the bill online and you’ll see: it’s not what it seems.
And There’s Even More Damage
- $900 billion in cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act
- 10 million Americans will lose basic healthcare
- Funding slashed for:
- Planned Parenthood
- School lunch programs
- Teacher training and education support
- And more…
This is the worst piece of legislation ever passed by the U.S. Congress.
It will hurt millions of Americans over the next four years—unless Democrats take back Congress from the MAGA cult and their corporate sponsors.
Higher Prices for Everyone
As if all that weren’t enough, Trump wants to slap tariffs on nearly all imported goods, increasing the cost of living for every American family. Groceries. Clothes. Electronics. You name it.
