There are so many compelling reasons to vote for Kamala Harris for president, it is hard to address them all. However, three issues stand out, illustrating the depth of the difference between her and her opponent.
① Character
If the election comes down to character alone, there will be no contest.
Vice President Kamala Harris has remained steadfast as a leader with ethics and principles throughout her career as attorney general of California, senator and vice president.
If strong moral character and being honest and trustworthy aren’t enough, add Donald Trump to the mix. The former president is a convicted felon who incited an insurrection and continues to spread lies and hatred.
Harris has the kind of integrity that could translate into the leadership needed to bring the United States together. As president, Harris could emerge as a world leader who is able to support our allies and maintain global relationships with a steady hand.
② Women’s Rights
One of Harris’s strongest promises is her pledge to codify Roe v. Wade, protecting constitutional rights to abortion access that were struck down by the Supreme Court
Trump was able to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices, making it possible to reverse Roe. In the wake of the reversal, states have placed increasingly harsh restrictions and bans on abortions. The result has been women having to carry pregnancies against their will, leading to compromised fertility and other life-threatening consequences. The Trump bans also limit access to contraception and some fertility treatments.
There’s a bipartisan bill to codify Roe, The Reproductive Freedom for All Act, that would restore abortion rights, and Harris plans to push the bill through Congress. If there are not enough votes to pass the bill, she would push to eliminate the filibuster and lower the number of votes necessary for the law to pass.
Harris has also spoken out about the high maternal mortality rates in the U.S., especially among Black and Native American women.
As a prosecutor and throughout her career, the vice president has been a strong advocate for survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
③ Diversity
In a country that has had 46 male presidents, the prospect a female president screams diversity. Harris has already achieved several historic firsts as the first Black, Asian American and female vice president. Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican-born father and an Indian-born mother.
Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, is Jewish. He is the first Jew to be married to a vice president and would be the first Jew married to a president. As such, Emhoff says he will make the fight against antisemitism a priority if he becomes first gentlemen.
Harris has championed marginalized groups from the LGTBQ+ community to the rural poor. Most recently, she announced plans to help black men economically.
It’s time to support Kamala Harris’s agenda by voting her in as president. Election Day is Nov. 5, but early voting has already begun in South Carolina. Get out the vote by encouraging family, friends and neighbors to vote for Kamala Harris in this historic election.
