Mandy Powers Norrell, the Democratic state legislator who delivered a searing rebuttal to Gov. Nikki Haley’s State of the State speech in January, will be the keynote speaker at the 5th Annual SHORE Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 25 in Myrtle Beach. The 2016 SHORE theme is “Celebrating the Power of Women.”
Mandy was tapped by the South Carolina Democratic Party to deliver the official Democratic response to Gov. Haley on January 20, 2016. In her remarks, Mandy drew sharp differences between Democrats and Republicans on the economy, health care, infrastructure, and charged that several decades of Republican domination has left South Carolina still one of the poorest states in the nation.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result,” she stated. “Yet for a generation, we have continued to elect the party that refused federal health care funds, that under-funds public education, and that refuses to address our crumbling roads and bridges.”
Her speech ended with a call to South Carolinians to “come home” to the party that cares about people, and where all are welcome.
Mandy represents House District 44, in the southern section of Lancaster County, where she grew up. She sits on the House Judiciary Committee. Prior to her election in 2012, she was City Attorney for the City of Lancaster from 1999-2012, and Town Attorney for the Town of Kershaw from 2010-2012. She served as Vice Chairman of the Palmetto Citizens Against Sexual Assault from 2008-2012.
